Тoday  we have an unusual lesson – a competition. There will be two teams at the lesson: the girl's team and the boy’s team. You will show your knowledge of the United Kingdom because our lesson is devoted to this country. You will have several tasks at the lesson. Some of them were prepared at home. I hope  your competition will be fun. I have lots of red and blue cards  here. For an excellent answer you will get a red  card, for a good answer – a blue card. At the end of the  competition you will count all the  cards you will have received. The team with the biggest number of  the red  cards will be the winner. The pupils who show the best knowledge of the British writers will be given the special prizes. Let’ s start our competition  and  introduce our teams to each other.

I want you to read the text about the Bronte Sisters and answer some questions about it.

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte

Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte, daughters of Yorkshire parson, were three English novelists. Initially they published their works under pseudonyms as at that time it was impossible for a woman to show that she could write. Charlotte, the eldest, was the author of the famous Jane Eyre and Villette novels where she incorporated autobiographical elements. Emily was  the best known for Wuthering Heigths and had a uniquely poetic style. The youngest sister, Anne Bronte,  was the least known. She wrote Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

There were six children in the Bronte family: five daughters, two of whom died in their childhood, and a son. After their mother’s death the children were brought up by their mother’s sister in Haworth. She was rather strict and often left them alone at home. To amuse themselves, the Bronte children created their own fantasy world .For example Emily and Anne created  Gondal – an  imaginary kingdom, for which they wrote short  stories. As adults, the three sisters worked for some time as governesses or teachers. Their brother, Patrick Branwell, is remembered for his portrait of his sisters, probably made in 1835. During 1848- 1849, Emily, Anne, and Patrick Branwell all died of tuberculosis, and Charlotte Bronte died in 1855, possibly due to pregnancy.

British literature is very rich. You can always find a town, a city or a piece of country connected with a famous writer. If you have an opportunity to go to Great Britain,  what  places  would you  visit  there and why?

The following task for you is  to guess who it was. You  should  put the passages of the story  in the right order, read them aloud  and tell what British writer this story is about.

Каждой команде дается по три экземпляра разрезанного на  части текста об одном из известных писателей - У.Шекспире или Р.Киплинге. За правильное чтение в логической последовательности и угадывание фамилии писателя команды получают призы.

Who was it?

He was one of the  world s greatest writers. He was born in Stratford-upon- Avon, England, where he received a classical education.

The Stratford school was a difficult place at that time. School days were long and only on the holidays he could have a real rest.

At the age of 18  he married Anne Hathaway and they have three children. When he was 31, he went to London. There he become an actor and began to write plays. He wrote plays for the famous Globe Theatre. Later he was one of the owners of the Globe Theatre.

He achieved great recognition during his lifetime. He wrote three types of  plays: histories, comedies and tragedies. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest writers of all time and has remained popular with readers around the world.

Who was it?

He was an English novelist, a short -story writer and a poet. He  was born in Bombay, India, in 1865 where his father worked at that time.

When he was 6 yeas old, his parent sent the boy to England where he attended  school. At the age of seventeen  he returned to India where he worked as a newspaper reporter for several years.

At twenty-one he published his first book of poems. A year later he wrote a book of short stories  about India. Between 1887 and 1899 he visited many countries and lived for some years in America where he married an American girl.

He  is best known for his works for children, especially  The Jungle Book. He  was awarded the Noble for Literature in 1907.
